在商务英语的翻译中，很多领域都会涉及到数字的翻译，其中包括数字的总数、数字的变化和变化幅度以及数字的倍数等。由于数字在英语和汉语中表达的方式不同，数字的翻译对于很多学生来说无疑是一大难点。

1. 数字的表达

数字在英语和汉语中的表达方式是不同的。汉语是个，十，百，千，万，十万，百万，千 万,亿,十亿……，也就是以“十”的倍数来表示；而英语则是在数字超过千以后，以“千” (thousand)的倍数来表达，如“一万”是“十千”，即ten thousand; “十万”是“百千”，即 hundred thousand;“ 百万”为million。百万以上的数字则用“百万”的倍数表达，如“千万”是“十百万”，即ten million;“亿”是“百百万”，即hundred million;“十亿”为billion。对于四位以上的数字，我们也可以说汉语中是四位计数（万，亿），而英语中是三位计数 (thousand,million,billion,trillion)。了解了两者的区别之后，我们在翻译数字的时候就要注意思维和表达方式的转换。

翻译时常会遇到一些较笼统的数字，如“几个”、“十几个”、“几十个”等，这类表达法需要熟记：几个（some，a few, several, a number of)，十几个（more than ten, no more than twenty)，几十个（dozens of), 几十年（decades)，七十好几（well over seventy)，好几百个 (hundreds of), 成千上万（thousands of),几十万（hundreds of thousands of),亿万 (hundreds of millions of)等。

例 1  123456789

在英语中，我们这样看：123，456，789，读作：one hundred and twenty-three million four hundred and fifty-six thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine。

在汉语中，我们这样看:1，2345，6789，读作：一亿两千三百四十五万六千七百八十九。

2. 数字倍数的表达以及翻译

英语表示倍数增减或倍数对比的句型多种多样，其中有一些很容易译错，主要原因在于：英汉两种语言在表述或对比倍数方面存在着语言与思维差异。现将常用的英语倍数句型及其正确泽法归纳如下：

A is n times bigger (longer, more, ...) than B.

A is n times as big (long, much, ...) as B.

A is n times the size(length, amount, ...) of B.

以上三句都表示A的大小（长度, 数量，……）是B的n倍或A比B大（长，多，……） n-1 倍。

increase to n times

increase n times/n-fold

increase by n times

increase by a factor of n

以上四式都表示:增加到n倍（或增加n - 1倍）。

例 2 The production of this factory has been increased to three times as compared with that of last year.

译文：这家工厂的产量比去年增加了2倍（增加到去年的3倍）。

在这类句型中increase常被raise, grow, go/step up, multiply等词所替代；同样，表不倍数减少可用decrease, reduce, shorten，go/slow down等。在翻译倍数减少的句子时，要注意decrease by 3 times应译为“减少2/3”，而不是“减少3/4”。

例 3 Switching time of the new-type transistor is shortened 3 times.

译文：新型晶体管的开关时间缩短了 1/3(即缩短到2/3)。

英语中还有表示倍数的专用词汇：double (增加1倍)，treble(增加2倍），quadruple (增加3倍）。

例 4 China's annual income per capita of 2004 quadrupled that of 1994.

译文：2004年中国的人均年收人比1994年翻了两番（比1994年增加了3倍）。
